Rope Adjuster Penny Loafer with Leather Sole
The Ivy League set an undeniable standard of prestigious dress in the 1960s. The resonance of this highly-regionalized expression of class and traditionalism has persevered in the United States in the ensuing five decades, but more immediately was its impact felt across the Pacific. Throughout the style districts of Japan, such as Osaka’s Amerikamura (“American Village”), clothiers traded in vintage Brooks Brothers suits, L. L. Bean duck boots and Pendleton shirts, while trend reports from overseas were turned gospel, as evidenced with the cult classic Take Ivy.
Our Penny Loafer design originates from this specific time and place. Each loafer is hand-crafted in the U.S.A. from Horween’s full grain chromexcel leathers. Chromexcel is a buttery, malleable "pull-up" leather born of a unique double-tanning process of vegetable and chrome treatments, which imbues the leather with pleasantly aromatic liquor notes. Its suppleness, revealing of lighter tones in its oiled surface when stretched, makes it particularly suitable to moccasin construction. The ornamentation details added to this Loafer evoke the rich heritage of decorative equestrian brass hardware used since the 1900’s, the hand-stitching details – a distinctive feature of a made-in-Maine loafersThe replaceable sole is 100% natural crepe rubber which provides superior traction, slip-resistance, and maximum cushion while Yuketen’s full-leather 100% vegetable tanned insole offers unparalleled comfort that conforms to the wearer’s foot.
Following the genuine handsewn construction of our moccasins, awl, needle and thread are used to handstitch each loafer's tip to the vamp leather, which cradles the foot underneath. The heel is then machine-lasted and heat-stamped leather soles of 100% vegetable-tanned leather are directly attached to the upper leather by traditional McKay stitching where after the leather stack heel with rubber key is nailed into outsole with respect to classic New England shoemaking tradition.
Full-leather insoles, leather tucks, and steel shank reinforcements increase fitting in the arch and heel as well as lessen foot fatigue by forming a stable bridge between the heel and ball of the individual owner's foot. Our Yuketen signature tucks are made from 100% vegetable-tanned leather and will naturally accommodate the distinct shape of the wearer.
Decades of tradition and clever attention to detail have enabled Yuketen to introduce this improved version of the classic penny loafer as an ideal option for business or casual engagements.
